Day 28 to 35

During the early stages of a Border Collie puppy's development, there are many fascinating changes taking place. From day 28 to day 35 of gestation, significant progress occurs in their growth and formation. Let's take a closer look at what happens during this crucial period. It is a busy time for puppy development. Over this week, the puppies will begin to look like puppies and by the end of the week, we will even have gender!

Embryonic Development

By day 28, the puppies have reached the embryonic stage of development. At this point, the embryos are about the size of a grape and have started to form the basic structures of their bodies. The spinal cord, brain, and heart are beginning to take shape, and tiny limb buds are visible.

During days 29 to 32, the puppies' organs continue to develop rapidly. The eyes and ears start to form, and the heart becomes more functional. The embryos also develop their respiratory and digestive systems, which are essential for their survival outside the womb.

Formation of External Features

Between days 32 and 35, the Border Collie puppies' external features become more defined. The limbs elongate, and the toes and claws start to form. The skin thickens, and the coat color begins to show. However, it is important to note that the final coat color may still change as the puppies grow.

At this stage, the puppies' facial features become more apparent. The snout lengthens, and the nose, eyes, and ears become more distinct. The formation of the mouth and teeth also begins during this period. Originally, the puppy's eyes were open but by day 32, the eyelid has developed, and the eyes will be closed. They will remain closed until roughly 2 weeks after delivery (give or take a few days).

As I mentioned, they are decidedly more dog like in appearance. The weight of the puppy at this stage is roughly 2 grams and he should measure about 30 to 35mm in length (slightly over an inch).

Movement and Sensory Development

Between days 28 and 35, the Border Collie puppies start to exhibit movement. Although their movements are still limited, they can wiggle and twitch as their muscles develop. These early movements help strengthen their muscles and prepare them for more significant movements later on.

The puppies' sensory development also progresses during this time. Their sense of touch becomes more refined, and they can respond to stimuli such as gentle touches on the mother's abdomen. While their eyes and ears are still developing, they will soon be able to perceive light and sound.

Conclusion

The period from day 28 to day 35 of gestation is a critical time for the development of Border Collie puppies. During this time, their organs form, external features become more defined, and they start to exhibit movement. As the puppies continue to grow and develop, they will soon be ready to enter the world and embark on their journey of life.

Boo is becoming rounder, and she is now having her meals twice a day. She sleeps more so her babies can grow. She definitely is more affectionate and looks for more quality time with us. Also, her needs are changing and the shift to puppy food is done gradually during this week. Some dogs see a return in appetite while others may not have much of an appetite all the way through their pregnancy.
